Protect the Permanent Fund. Protect the PFD. Build for the Next Generation.
The Alaska Permanent Fund is one of the greatest investments our state has ever made. It belongs to all generations of Alaskans, including the children who have not been born yet.
My goal is not simply to argue about how large next year’s PFD should be. We have been having that argument for years while avoiding the bigger question:
How do we strengthen the Permanent Fund, provide Alaskans with a dependable dividend, and create new revenue so future generations inherit something stronger than we received?
1. Protect the Permanent Fund in the Constitution
The Permanent Fund must remain protected from short-term political decisions. I support strong constitutional protection of the Fund’s principal and a clear, sustainable system governing how its earnings are used.
The Fund should continue growing so that today’s decisions do not come at the expense of tomorrow’s Alaskans.
2. Give Alaskans Greater Certainty About Their PFD
Alaskans should not have to wait every year for politicians to decide how much of their dividend they will receive.
I support establishing a sustainable PFD formula that gives Alaskans greater predictability while protecting the long-term health of the Permanent Fund.
If we want larger dividends, simply taking more money out of the Fund is not a long-term solution. We need to create additional revenue.
3. Find New Revenue to Grow the PFD
Alaska’s economy is changing, and our revenue system must change with it.
I want Alaska to examine new sources of revenue connected to economic growth, new technology, responsible resource development, and industries that profit from Alaska’s resources and workforce.
One proposal in my 25-Year Plan is an automation and artificial-intelligence contribution. As technology replaces portions of the traditional workforce, we should explore a system in which some of the economic value created by that automation benefits Alaskans.
Under my proposal, revenue generated through an automation contribution would be divided:
50% to strengthen benefits for Alaskans, including the PFD
50% to support Alaska’s long-term fiscal needs
This concept would require careful study and legislation before implementation. The purpose is simple: technological progress should improve the lives of ordinary Alaskans, not leave our communities with fewer jobs and a smaller tax base.
4. Make Alaska’s Resources Work for Generations
Oil helped build the Permanent Fund, but Alaska possesses far more than oil.
Our long-term strategy should include responsible development of oil, natural gas, minerals, renewable energy, technology, and other opportunities while ensuring Alaska receives a fair return from its resources.
When Alaska provides tax incentives or financial benefits to corporations, there should be a measurable return to the people of Alaska.
5. Think 25 Years Ahead
The Permanent Fund should never become merely a checking account used to solve today’s budget problems.
Every major decision should answer a simple question:
Will this leave Alaska’s children better off 25 years from now?
My plan is to protect the Fund, establish greater certainty for the PFD, develop new sources of revenue, strengthen Alaska’s economy, and allow future generations to benefit from the wealth we build today.
This isn’t about the next election.
It’s about the next generation.
